BuildSMART v1
Project Overview
BuildSMART (Building Supply chain Material Analysis and Risk Trade-off Tool) is an ESTCP-funded research tool developed by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh and UC Davis. The tool is designed to help military facility planners, public works professionals, and acquisition staff assess material demand, cost, and supply chain availability for construction projects.
Research Team
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL): Principal investigator and lead development. University of Pittsburgh: Building archetypes and material specifications. UC Davis: Cement and supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) supply chain analysis.
Scope (v1)
BuildSMART v1 focuses on material demand estimation and supply chain availability assessment for concrete-related materials (cement, aggregates, supplementary cementitious materials) and structural steel. The tool supports scenario analysis for supply-chain stressors and alternative material substitution planning. Future versions will extend coverage to additional material families and include lifecycle assessment and cost projection capabilities.
Funding and Support
This research is supported by the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP), U.S. Department of Defense, and the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science.
